If you need mental health care but can't afford the deductibles or don't have insurance, don't despair. There are resources out there to help you get the care you need. This article will provide you with a summary of some of those resources, but is not by any means an exhaustive list. Call your general practitioner. He or she may be able to provide you with a list of mental health care practitioners who offer pro-bono (free) care, or affordable clinicians with sliding fee scales. Contact the advocacy group for the issue you are dealing with to see if they can help you find the treatment you need. (e.g., the National Alliance on Mental Illness www.nami.org (see also their hotline below); or Alcoholics Anonymous www.aa.org, etc.) Advocacy groups usually have a list of local mental health care providers and clinics. Call your local hospital. Teaching hospitals may be able to offer more affordable health care. Some colleges also have programs where their psychology students offer affordable or free counseling while under the supervision of a licensed clinical psychologist. If your need for mental health care is urgent, use a crisis hotline. The people manning the phone lines will be able to direct you somewhere for immediate help. Some examples follow: • Covenant House Hotline: 800-999-9999 - this is a crisis line for youth, teens, and families. It gives callers locally based referrals throughout the United States and provides help for youth and parents regarding drugs, abuse, homelessness, runaway children, and message relays. Operates 24 hours, seven days a week. • National Mental Health Association Hotline: 800-969-6642 9AM-5PM, Mon-Fri. They will provide you with information on mental health topics and referrals, as well as access to an information specialist • National AIDS Hotline: 800-342-AIDS (2437). They will provide you with information and referrals to local hotlines, testing centers, and counseling. Open 24 hours, seven days a week. • 1-800-840-6537: Parent Hotline - this is a group dedicated to helping families who are in a crisis situation involving drugs. • National Drug Information Treatment and Referral Hotline: 800-662-HELP (4357)They provide information, support, treatment options and referrals to local rehab centers for any drug or alcohol problem. Operates 24 hours, seven days a week. Ask your child's school guidance counselor for referrals. He or she should be able to help you locate affordable mental health care. Contact your local division of social services. Go to your county's website to find the contact information. They may be able to provide you with a list of affordable health care clinics or practitioners. Search on the web for "find a therapist" websites such as www.therapists.psychologytoday.com, which will help you find providers who offer affordable sliding payment scales or even pro bono (free) care. Ask the leader of your religious community for a referral for pastoral care or other spiritual counseling. I hope you found this information helpful for getting the care you need.
