About 'dedicated health care'|... in information related to inadequate health and inadequate mental health care. They are gathering this informa-tion for the purpose of starting...








If               you               need               mental               health               care               but               can't               afford               the               deductibles               or               don't               have               insurance,               don't               despair.

There               are               resources               out               there               to               help               you               get               the               care               you               need.

This               article               will               provide               you               with               a               summary               of               some               of               those               resources,               but               is               not               by               any               means               an               exhaustive               list.

Call               your               general               practitioner.

He               or               she               may               be               able               to               provide               you               with               a               list               of               mental               health               care               practitioners               who               offer               pro-bono               (free)               care,               or               affordable               clinicians               with               sliding               fee               scales.
               Contact               the               advocacy               group               for               the               issue               you               are               dealing               with               to               see               if               they               can               help               you               find               the               treatment               you               need.

(e.g.,               the               National               Alliance               on               Mental               Illness               www.nami.org               (see               also               their               hotline               below);               or               Alcoholics               Anonymous               www.aa.org,               etc.)               Advocacy               groups               usually               have               a               list               of               local               mental               health               care               providers               and               clinics.
               Call               your               local               hospital.

Teaching               hospitals               may               be               able               to               offer               more               affordable               health               care.

Some               colleges               also               have               programs               where               their               psychology               students               offer               affordable               or               free               counseling               while               under               the               supervision               of               a               licensed               clinical               psychologist.
               If               your               need               for               mental               health               care               is               urgent,               use               a               crisis               hotline.

The               people               manning               the               phone               lines               will               be               able               to               direct               you               somewhere               for               immediate               help.

Some               examples               follow:
               •               Covenant               House               Hotline:               800-999-9999               -               this               is               a               crisis               line               for               youth,               teens,               and               families.

It               gives               callers               locally               based               referrals               throughout               the               United               States               and               provides               help               for               youth               and               parents               regarding               drugs,               abuse,               homelessness,               runaway               children,               and               message               relays.

Operates               24               hours,               seven               days               a               week.
               •               National               Mental               Health               Association               Hotline:               800-969-6642               9AM-5PM,               Mon-Fri.

They               will               provide               you               with               information               on               mental               health               topics               and               referrals,               as               well               as               access               to               an               information               specialist
               •               National               AIDS               Hotline:               800-342-AIDS               (2437).

They               will               provide               you               with               information               and               referrals               to               local               hotlines,               testing               centers,               and               counseling.

Open               24               hours,               seven               days               a               week.
               •               1-800-840-6537:               Parent               Hotline               -               this               is               a               group               dedicated               to               helping               families               who               are               in               a               crisis               situation               involving               drugs.
               •               National               Drug               Information               Treatment               and               Referral               Hotline:               800-662-HELP               (4357)They               provide               information,               support,               treatment               options               and               referrals               to               local               rehab               centers               for               any               drug               or               alcohol               problem.

Operates               24               hours,               seven               days               a               week.
               Ask               your               child's               school               guidance               counselor               for               referrals.

He               or               she               should               be               able               to               help               you               locate               affordable               mental               health               care.
               Contact               your               local               division               of               social               services.

Go               to               your               county's               website               to               find               the               contact               information.

They               may               be               able               to               provide               you               with               a               list               of               affordable               health               care               clinics               or               practitioners.
               Search               on               the               web               for               "find               a               therapist"               websites               such               as               www.therapists.psychologytoday.com,               which               will               help               you               find               providers               who               offer               affordable               sliding               payment               scales               or               even               pro               bono               (free)               care.
               Ask               the               leader               of               your               religious               community               for               a               referral               for               pastoral               care               or               other               spiritual               counseling.
