About 'visitor health insurance'|Health Insurance Exchange regulations are out, and they make me feel like a visitor from the future
The types of preparations needed for going to USA are altogether different in each case based upon your visa category. The students going for higher studies need a particular pattern of preparations while the visitors/tourists and the immigrants have to prepare themselves in altogether different style and manner. I will try to cover the basic preparations required to be made for the visitors/tourists prior to and during their stay in USA in this article. The set up begins once the visitor visa is already obtained and you are about to begin the most memorable experience of your life of visiting USA. You will surely want this unique experience to be the most pleasant one in your life and will not spare any efforts to get one. Here are some useful tips that shall help you to achieve this. 1. Buy your air tickets- You must buy the air tickets in one of the most reputed airlines and should not fall for the traps laid out by the cheap and non standard airlines. Plan to land in USA on Saturday afternoon or so. This will be the most convenient time for your hosts to come to receive you at the airport, being the weekend. By reaching on Saturday, you will be able to pass Sunday with your host at home so that you can get slightly familiarized with the house and the area setup. The jetlag effects would also end by Monday morning, when your host has to go for the job. You will be gaining time in this journey if you are traveling from East to West. That means that you must plan to leave Mumbai at early morning hours so as to reach USA by late afternoon on Saturday. Try to avoid train journey for reaching to Mumbai, if possible to store your energy for the long tiring journey to USA. Most of the air lines are now providing direct connecting flight from the city of your residence in India. Make sure that you inform your host about your exact flight details of arrival to USA, well in advance so that he can plan to receive you. Clearly indicate your requirements like wheel chair, types of meals, seat numbers you want etc. Such facilities are provided by all the airlines free of cost. Wheel chair can be really convenient, if you are not in a position to take long walks at the airports. Keep in mind that long walks will always be there at almost all the airports. Try to give around three hours of time gap between any flight changes in the way. Preserve your air tickets carefully with all other documents. You must also book your return ticket as the round tickets are cheaper as compared to the one way ticket. The round trip tickets are now issued for the period of one year by all the airlines. 2. Follow the luggage rules strictly- You must carry the luggage as prescribed by the air lines. At present, most of the air lines allow two unaccompanied baggages, weighing 23 KG (52 LBS) each, per passenger. There are size limitations also. Please get all such data from the airlines and prepare your bags accordingly. Never put any valuable items like jewellary, cash, or the important documents in unaccompanied baggage. Keep your hand bag very light. Some important medicines needed during the flight, all documents, and the cash etc with one pair of your clothing only should be kept in the hand bag. 3. Documents- You must take 4 to 5 Xerox copies of your travel documents like passport, visa etc and leave them with your close relatives/friends. This will help you in case you lose original documents during travel. One small hand pouch with belt to put it across your neck is a good idea to carry all original and important documents. 4. Plan on internal travel within USA- the most suitable means to travel within USA is by air. You can purchase VUSA (visit USA) air tickets from your home country at very reasonable rates. At present, the round trip air ticket covering 3 destinations anywhere in USA are available at around $550. Greyhound buses and Amtrak trains can also be used for this purpose. However, I would not advise to travel by Amtrak as these trains can get frequently delayed at times, affecting your travel schedule adversely. 5. Buy health Insurance- You must buy the suitable health insurance policy in your home country as this is quite economical as compared to buying such policies in USA. There are many good private insurance companies like Bajaj, Iffco- Tokio, and ICICI etc available in India for this purpose. If you are between 50 and 60 years of age, health insurance for $100,000 can be available with one time premium of Rs.35,000, ($825 approximately) for both, you and your spouse, for a period of six months. Such policies are issued for a maximum period of 6 months. 6. Allowable period of stay in USA- The visitors/tourists are allowed to stay for a maximum period of 6 months only. It is strongly suggested never to overstay on false pretense as that may affect your visa issuance and your record adversely in future. 7. Foreign exchange to carry- Each Indian passenger is allowed to buy $5000, maximum, every calendar year, through many nationalized banks and private traders under FTS (foreign travel scheme). Try to take the US currency as much as you can from your home country, based on your requirement and the plans in USA. Make sure to declare the amount you are carrying with you at USA airport to the custom authorities. 8. Medical checks and the medicines- You must get yourself thoroughly checked medically prior to your departure and must carry all the required medicines with you. It is extremely difficult to buy the prescription medicines in USA. 9. Driving license- If you intend to drive in USA, please make sure to carry your international driving license that may allow you to drive in USA for sometime based on the state laws where you stay. I, however, would not advise this as the driving laws are altogether different in USA as compared to India. And taking such risk may prove dangerous. 10. Items to carry- Do carry sufficient clothes, depending upon the season you are traveling. Make sure to carry spare glasses, good leather shoes and the waist belts etc. Never try to carry any eatables with you as US customs are very strict on this. Lastly, always remember to carry some specialty gift articles from your home country for your American friends. This proves vital at times, and you can earn a very good life time friend through this small gifts. In short, keep in mind that this trip is extremely important for you and nothing must be allowed to spoil it. A good systematic planning based on these tips is the first and most important step to achieve it. |
